My Favorite Place of 2009: The Dinner Table?

by Jesshampson on December 11, 2009

dinnertableSince we already established on the first day of this challenge that I did not go anywhere in 2009 my favorite place is kind of unusual.

In 2002, when I graduated from high school, I moved out of my parents house to go off to college at Baylor University.  Three years later my sister did the same by moving to San Marcos to become a Bobcat.  After college I was dead set on moving to Austin to find my independence and my dream job in the tech capital of Texas.  It was at the end of 2008, while my sister was still at school, that I decided my adventure in Austin was over and I wanted to come back home.  In May of 2009 my sister finished college and after 7 year of living a part we were all, once again, reunited around the dinner table, my favorite place of 2009.

I can remember as a kid the dinner table was a time when my parents asked my sister and I about our days at school and what we were learning. Then my dad would take the time to quiz us on countries and the names of their capital cities, a game we fondly called “Town, Country, Capital”.  We still play this game, the countries have just got harder and sometimes we are actually able to stump my dad.

Dinner time a was sacred time in the Hampson household.  We were not allowed to answer the phone(that was mom’s rule) and all the TVs in the house were off.  It was a time for us to take a break from the world as a family, and simply enjoy one another’ s company.

I didn’t realized how much I missed that time till this year when we were reunited around the dinner table and celebrated being together once again, and this time we are all here to stay.
