Friendship
“Once in awhile, you make friends who have the power to restore your faith in humanity. Once in the greatest of whiles, you make friends who can restore your faith in yourself.” – Mariska Van Aalist
I have been blessed to many amazing friends in my life. Some of them have come and gone. Some of them I’ve lost touch with, but thanks to technology have been able to catch up on where they are in the world and send the yearly Christmas card. It’s important to have these type of friends, but I think it’s even more important to have a friend “gets” you. These types of friends are hard to come by, but can change you life if you find one.
I was fortunate to have found this type of friendship through my younger sister, Sarah. Throughout the 22 years that I have had the privileged to be Sarah’s sister she has made me laugh so hard that coke, milk, juice, Gatorade and any other type of beverage has passed through my nasal passages. I truly think she just waits for me to take a big drink before she says something ridiculously funny or so outlandish that it just all comes out of my nose. She has a brilliant mind, unmatchable wit and, better yet a heart of gold. Sarah inspires me daily, and while I know I am the older sister, I look to her as a constant teacher and mentor.
She is the most loyal friend a person could ask for. We can yell at each other and argue till we are out of breath, yet I know at the end of the day she is there is support me, and I her. I can call on her at anytime, even 3 o’clock in the morning when I am having an asthma attack, or when I need a ride home from a New Years Eve party but suddenly disappear, and even just to chat about the 800lbchic I saw walking down the street wearing spandex pleather pants.
We have the type of relationship that other people hate. We can communicate in half sentences or without speaking at all. We bust into laughter with just a look from each other or we can sit in silence and just enjoy each others company. I have often called Sarah just to sit on the phone with her, and while neither of us really have much to say, it’s just nice to know she is at the other end.

Sarah restores my faith in humanity daily with her hilarious stories from working at Target, or to remind me how blessed I am to be employed, have a loving family, an amazing education, and of course a sister and friend like her, haha.
